The
Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has officially announced its top
safety picks for the 2012 model year, and five of Volvo’s models – the C30,
S60, S80, XC60, and XC90 – received top marks.
According
to the IIHS website, the organization is dedicated to, “reducing the losses – deaths, injuries, and property
damage – from crashes on the nation’s highways.” As such, the IIHS annually tests each maker’s
models in frontal offset, side impact, roof strength, and rear crash protection
and head restraint before naming a model one of its top safety picks for the
model year.
“The annual safety picks
from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety are a testament to what is
important to Volvo: the safety of our customers,” says Marc Apirian, the
General Sales Manager at NJ Volvo dealer Prestige Volvo in East Hanover,
NJ. “In addition to Volvo’s performance
in simulated crashes, the vehicles encompass the best accident preventation
measures offered by current technology.”
In the frontal offset
test, evaluation is based on intrusion to the occupant compartment at a speed
of 40 mph. A male crash dummy is used,
and film of the crash is analyzed in slow motion to determine the effectiveness
of the head restraint.
The side impact is
evaluated on a crash in which a moving barrier representing a truck hits the
vehicle at a speed of 31 mph. Ratings
are based on injuries sustained by a women’s test dummy, assessment of head
protection, and also the vehicle’s structural performance during the collision
itself.
For the roof strength
test, a piece of metal is pushed against the vehicle’s roof at a rate of .2
inches per second. For a positive mark
in this category, the vehicle must withstand force four times the vehicle’s
weight before the metal crushes five inches of the roof.
Rear crash protection was based on the
height of a head restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the
head of an average-size man. Head
restraints were tested dynamically using a dummy measuring force on the neck,
simulating a crash in which a standing vehicle is hit at a speed of 20 mph.
